What happens if a parent is missing and there are no siblings? We get our most useful clues when we can compare the DNA of a patient to that of his or her two parents. If a parent is missing we can often deduce what the missing parent's genotype must have been by looking at the genotype of the patients siblings. Even if a parent is missing and there are no available siblings then we can still get some information by just comparing the patient with the single parent. The same is true if both biological parents are missing but one sibling or more are available. DNA from a patient with absolutely no available siblings and no available biological parents is of only limited help in terms of trying to discover which genes impart susceptibility. We would not be able to use the patient's DNA in the gene discovery phase but we would still be able to use it confirm our discoveries. Back to TopWhat are the logistics for getting blood from the parents and/or siblings? While the patient is in the operating room venipuncture on the parents could be performed by whatever method is easiest for you; your nurse could do it in the holding area or the recovery room, your resident could do it, you could do it after the procedure or your hospital laboratory could do it (if they charge for the service we can pay them). You could even provide an "outside kit" to the parents and have them go to their family doctor or outside laboratory who could mail the vials of blood directly to us. Back to TopWhere do we get the shipping materials from?Once you have been granted permission by your Institutional Review Board, the staff at the Center for Genomic Sciences will mail you a hamper of tubes and shipping materials with "postage paid" FedEx airbills. Back to TopDo the specimens need to be refrigerated or frozen? No Under usual circumstances one does not need to refrigerate or freeze the specimens. One does not need to refrigerate the specimen while waiting to send it off, assuming that one is only waiting a couple or a few hours. However, let us assume that that you missed a FedEx pickup time and the specimen was only going to be picked up the following day (or even worse, was only going to be picked after a weekend) then it would be good idea to store it in a refrigerator (about 1°C which is 34°F). Once it was handed off to FedEx it does not need to be refrigerated. Much more important however, than the temperature, is the total time from specimen being drawn to time that the specimen arrives in the Center for Genomic Sciences Laboratory. Back to TopHow do we use the "outside kit?"Get an outside kit to the human subject who will have blood drawn outside. When we designed the logistics we imagined that the kit would be used for a human subject (most likely a father) who was willing to participate but for whatever reason could not make it to your institution. Typically, you can give the "outside kit" to the mother who can give it to the father who can have the blood drawn at his primary care practitioner or any pathology laboratory. Code the tube: Please write the human subject's code on the yellow-topped tube before you hand it out, otherwise when it arrives in our laboratory we will not know who it is from. Consent: The consent form should not come to us, the Center for Genomic Sciences. So please also provide a consent form that the father (or whoever it is that is getting their blood drawn) can complete, sign and mail back to you. Billing: Some primary care practitioners and pathology laboratories will charge for performing phlebotomy. The human subject does not pay. Please ask the service provider to send the bill to Ms. Tawanda Littlejohn, Center for Genomic Sciences, 320 E. North Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15212, USA. The bill should state “RRP venipuncture.” Back to TopCan we send out on a Friday?Yes All the Federal Express waybills are already checked off for Saturday delivery. We have an arrangement with security to call us if a specimen comes in on a Saturday so we can process it that day. Back to TopWhen is ... ?[This is the answer to the question.] Back to TopFarrel J.
