  • Influence of genetic and environmental factors on biofilm development and dynamic behavior.
  • Mechanical strength of biofilms and removal strategies.
  • Detachment, antibiotic resistance and virulence of emboli from biofilms.
  • Biofilm monitoring in medicine, industry and natural environments.

Biofilm mechanics.
Biofilm Microbiology relating to Structure, Hydrodynamics, and Mass Transport.

Microbial Fouling and Corrosion in Industrial Systems.

Publications, Presentations and Web Based Materials:

Over 60 peer reviewed publications, book chapters, and conference proceedings. In addition I have materials on the web at the ASM peer reviewed MicrobeLibrary collection (peer reviewed) and the Center for Biofilm Engineering Movie Archive Site. I have been invited to speak and present workshops at 25 International Conferences in the US, Asia and Europe and have been invited to lecture to various industrial companies.

Awards, Boards and Affiliations:

2003 Outstanding Research Award, College of Engineering, Montana State University-Bozeman.

Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (HWK) fellowship for 3 months study (1 month summer 2002, 1 month summer 2004) in Delmonorst, Germany for collaborative research with Dr. Dirk deBeer and the Microsensors Group at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, Bremen, Germany.
